What Is Good Mental Health?

Mental health refers to our mental well-being; the ability to enjoy life, and cope with normal daily stresses of living.

Living through a pandemic, having your sovereignty constantly being threatened by another country and watching people being shot and murdered is NOT considered normal daily living.

We are living in crazy times. Don’t be hard on yourself if you’ve been struggling. Take this opportunity to see where you are. Make a plan and take action to improve your mental health.

What is good mental health?

In short, good mental health is the ability to thrive regardless of circumstance. Good mental health is the foundation for thinking and communication skills, learning, emotional growth, resilience and self-esteem.

Good mental health allows you to thrive versus simply survive.

It isn’t about avoiding problems or having the ‘perfect’ life. Good mental health allows you to get back up and persevere through normal life difficulties and challenges. Some refer to it as mental strength or mental toughness, but it’s simply good mental health.  Good mental health is the key to our overall well-being.

People with good mental health:

  • Work productively

  • Realize their full potential

  • Have a sense of contentment

  • Can deal with stress and bounce back from adversity

  • Have a sense or purpose and meaning

  • Can build and maintain fulfilling relationships

  • Are flexible and can adapt to change

  • Balance work, play, rest and activity

  • Have self-confidence and high self-esteem

  • Make meaningful contributions to their communities

Our mental health, like our physical health, begins at birth and continues throughout our lifetime. Mental health is a continuum that fluctuates over time due to stress (personal, work, financial), lifestyle, trauma and genetics, just like physical health.

Having poor mental health, doesn’t necessarily mean you have a mental illness, but you will likely require help from a professional to get back on track, and back to thriving.

Look at the chart below and see where you fall. How’s your mental health? Make a plan and take small steps to towards regaining better mental health, or seek help from a professional.
